FOOD PRODUCTION IN BEAUTIFUL SURROUNDINGS
Palsgaard: A world of plant-based emulsifiers
When you visit Palsgaard Estate and Palsgaard Castle Park, it is difficult to overlook another resident on the property.
For more than 100 years, Palsgaard A/S has dedicated itself to developing and supplying plant-based emulsifiers for food. And just like emulsifiers, we're proud to say that we play a small but crucial role in providing delicious food to a growing population. We also offer our responsibly produced, tailor-made solutions for non-food markets such as polymers and personal care.
Driven by innovation and expertise
Ever since our founder, landowner Einar Viggo Schou, invented the plant-based food emulsifier back in 1917, an entrepreneurial spirit has driven everything we do. With a global network of seven application centres, our team of dedicated food experts is ready to help the international food industry explore new trends. By leveraging their deep understanding of emulsifiers, they are constantly driving innovation and creating new opportunities for food producers worldwide.
Our sister company Nexus, which specializes in the research and development of emulsifiers, plays a vital role in this process. Nexus has a high degree of scientific freedom, which allows researchers to expand the boundaries of emulsifier technology. This ensures a steady flow of innovative solutions for the benefit of Palsgaard and our activities.
Emulsifiers allow you to mix otherwise incompatible ingredients such as water, oil, and air. Although they only make up a fraction of the finished product, they have a huge impact on its quality. They allow manufacturers of baked goods, confectionery, dairy, ice cream, and plant-based foods to create stable emulsions, prevent oil leakage, and control viscosity and fluffiness.
This results in delicious foods like soft cakes, perfectly shaped chocolates, and delicious whipped cream. Combined with stabilizers, emulsifiers also help improve the stability, mouthfeel, and texture of ice cream, dairy, and plant-based alternatives. In addition, emulsifiers contribute to extended shelf life, reduced resource consumption, fewer e-numbers, less fat, salt and sugar and fewer allergens.
Committed to responsibility
Long before CSR and ESG became a concept, Palsgaard established a culture of responsibility, loyalty and respect. We take care of our employees, local communities and strive to make Palsgaard an attractive place to work.
We are ambitious and are constantly working to improve. From responsible sourcing to reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, we are actively involved in tackling societal challenges such as food waste, food safety and food shortages. We have been a member of RSPO since 2008 and offer all palm-based food emulsifiers with RSPO SG certification.
More than food
Our dual-action emulsifiers also act as plant-based ingredients for personal care and as additives to plastics, where they act as effective, safe and sustainable alternatives to conventional additive chemistry. By providing anti-static and anti-fog properties, they not only help to keep food packaging clean and attractive, but also to keep food fresh for longer and help to reduce food waste.
Palsgaard is owned by the Schou Foundation and has close to 700 employees in 17 countries and six factories on four continents. We had sales of EUR 300 million (DKK 2.3 billion) in 2023.
