SCULPTURES IN PALSGAARD CASTLE PARK

Slotsvasen – Another way of watching

Artist: Sophia Kalkau.

Sophia Kalkau often works with minimalist and precise sculptural forms alongside her photographic works.

The castle vase – Another way of watching, is a modern version of the large castle vases that often stood in the estates' parks in the past.

The work was originally turned in white-painted wood back in 2007.

For Palsgaard, Sophia Kalkau has instead, with the help of stonemason Flemming Brian Nielsen, chosen to form the tumbling vase in the black granite African diabase.

At the unveiling, she counted her work as a tumble and a tossed head. - Deep black, it reflects itself in its plinth, in an enchanting and enchanted place, said Sophia Kalkau.

She is not unaccustomed to receiving commissions such as the task of creating a work of art for Palsgaard. Still, the challenge has a special place in the Zealand artist's heart.

- It has been particularly exciting for me to carry out this task, because it is such a beautiful place. - It has also been fun to try to create a dialogue between the historic buildings, the old park and modern art, said Sophia Kalkau.
