BEHIND PALSGAARD ESTATE

People in Palsgaard's history

For 600 years, a number of enterprising people have put effort, commitment and vision into Palsgaard. Each and every one of us has had an important role in creating the Palsgaard we know today.

200 years with the Reedtz family

The noble family Reedtz bought Palsgaard in 1665 and owned the place for more than 200 years. In the 1730s, they converted the old courtyard into the building you see today: A three-winged manor house in Baroque style. In the 1840s, the family began to establish a landscape garden.

The family was also important to the community around Palsgaard. Niels Juel Reedtz founded Færgegården "Juels Minde", which later came to give its name to the town of Juelsminde.

Chancellor Peder Reedtz (pictured) owned Palsgaard from 1665 until his death in 1674 and was the most prominent of Palsgaard's owners throughout history.

A German prince develops the place

In 1877, the Reedtz family sold Palsgaard to the German Prince Emil von Schoenaich-Carolath. He continued the development of the garden and planted the first of Palsgaard's many avenues. He also drained the wetland "Håbet" for use for grazing and hay.

A Norwegian baron has great visions

In 1898, Palsgaard changed owners again. Now it was the diplomat Baron Frederik Wedel Jarlsberg who took over, and he had big plans to develop the place. Central heating, water closets and electric lights were installed in the main building.

In "The Hope", the baron planted miles of windbreaks and began cultivating the land. The garden was expanded into a park, and several avenues were planted so that the gentry could arrive in the style of the estate at Palsgaard and walk in the shade of the trees to the bathhouse in the bay.

A touch of Nordic history

In 1905, Palsgaard was the setting when Baron Jarlsberg was in charge of negotiations with the Swedish royal family about who should be king of Norway after Norway's secession from Sweden. It was the Danish Prince Carl who was given the royal name Haakon VII.

The Schou family finds "the most beautiful place"

In 1908, businessman Einar Viggo Schou and his wife Elisabeth were looking to settle down in "The most beautiful place in Denmark". The choice fell on Palsgaard, and it was the beginning of a great business adventure and a new era.
