SEE MUSICALS ON DENMARK'S MOST BEAUTIFUL OPEN-AIR STAGE

Palsgaard Summer Play

Since 1972, the castle park has been home to the amateur theatre association Palsgaard Sommerspil, which over the past 50+ years has performed a string of theatre performances and musicals for an audience of 10 - 15,000 people per season.

It began with A Midsummer Night's Dream in the park by the old observatory. Since 1986, Gudrun Schou's open-air stage has been performed, where a number of well-known musicals have been performed with great success such as My Fair Lady, Altlantis, The Sound of Music, Aida, Grease, Midt om Natten, Chess, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and many, many more.

See pictures from the performances in the gallery below.

The story behind the scenes

Palsgaard Sommerspil's adventure began in 1972, when a group of theatre enthusiasts from Glud knocked on the door of the landowner couple Herbert and Gudrun Schou. They dreamed of performing theatre in the beautiful castle park, and the landowner couple were quickly enthusiastic about the idea.

Herbert and Gudrun Schou took an active part in the planning of the first performances, and Gudrun Schou became an invaluable support for Palsgaard Sommerspil. Her commitment was so great that in 1986 the Schou Foundation donated her a brand new open-air stage on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

The stage, designed by Professor Vilhelm Wohlert and landscape architect Andreas Bruun, has since then been the setting for this summer's performance.

To honour Gudrun Schou's efforts, a memorial plaque has been inserted in the wall above the stage. Before the dress rehearsal of the Summer Plays, actors and crew gather at the memorial plaque to commemorate Gudrun Schou and her importance to Palsgaard Summer Play.
