WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT PALSGAARD
A royal connection: Frederik Wedel Jarlsberg and Palsgaard
Among Palsgaard's more famous owners we find the Norwegian diplomat and baron, Frederik Wedel Jarlsberg, who owned the castle from 1898 to 1908. His time at Palsgaard was marked by an event of great historical significance: Norway's secession from Sweden in 1905.
In the wake of the dissolution of the union, the question of Norway's new king was crucial. It was during this critical period that Wedel Jarlsberg played a central role. He began secret negotiations with the Swedish royal family at Palsgaard, more specifically in the right wing of the palace. This wing has since been named "The King's Wing" in memory of the historic event.
The negotiations led to the Danish Prince Carl being elected King of Norway under the name Haakon VII. The same Prince Carl was a cadet on board the frigate Jylland, another historical treasure with a relation to Palsgaard.
